Papiya Mazumdar

Papiya Mazumdar

Lecturer in Global Health ,United Kingdom

A human geographer and demographer by training, Papiya has over fifteen years of post-doctoral experience in population health research in South Asian contexts. She has worked in multiple higher education and research institutes based in India between 2005 and 2017, contributing as faculty in population health for several post-graduate programmes in demography, sustainable development and public health. Besides her role as an academic, Papiya has worked in proximity with policy makers and other stakeholders across multiple states in India through multiple research and advocacy assignments.

Prior to resuming her current position with the University of Leeds in February 2022, as a post-doctoral Research Fellow she had been part of the Mental Health and Addiction Research Group (MHARG) based at the University of York (September 2018 – January 2022), working on an international mental health research programme funded by the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR), UK . This granted her a unique opportunity for collaboration with clinical psychiatrists and psychologists, pertaining to designing behavioural and combined pharmacological interventions targeted at patients seeking care for common mental health disorders (CMD) and severe mental illnesses (SMI) from specialized government mental health care facilities in three major South Asian countries. And sequentially moving into feasibility-testing of those designed inventions through setting up of randomized controlled trial studies. Though a steep learning curve matching to her background training, the project had been a rewarding experiential learning for Papiya.

Building on her academic and research backgrounds in geography and population health further, with years of primary research experience focusing at the fragile ecosystems of coastal Bay of Bengal region in India and Bangladesh, and the recent experiential learning in physical-mental comorbidity research- Papiya is currently studying risks and impacts of climate change adversities for population physical and mental health outcomes. She is keen to strengthen research – policy ties for possible mitigation of climate change risks and impacts on population health with a primary pivot maintained on the vulnerable coastal geographies in South Asia, and subsequent knowledge transfer to other low and middle-income country contexts looming with similar challenges.

Based at the University of Leeds, Papiya is a core member of the newly initiated Climate Change and Global Health Advisory group coordinated by the Priestley International Centre for Climate Change, and also is a part of the Interdisciplinary Mental Health Research Network.
